Sleep is essential to lead a healthy lifestyle. As much as exercising and eating right contribute to good health, sufficient amount of sleep keeps one active through the day.

Stress, anxiety and hectic lifestyle are major causes for sleep disorders. There are more than 70 kinds of sleep disorders. Restless leg syndrome, sleepwalking, narcolepsy, insomnia and sleep apnea are some of the common sleep disorders.

Lack of sleep ultimately leads to health problems like heart diseases, weight gain, depression and hypertension. Millions of people around the world are affected by sleep disorders ranging from mild to severe problems. A majority of the people with sleep disorders remain undiagnosed, which ultimately has a negative effect on their health, and in some cases cause permanent damage to health. Lack of sleep cripples the thinking process and the ability to keep emotions under control. Total sleep deprivation can also be fatal.


Meditation helps to de-stress the mind and enables one to get good sleep. Sleep disorders can also be kept at bay by practicing yoga regularly. A good amount of sleep restores and renews the body. Sleep is essential to consolidate memories and also keep our thinking process sharp. So, how much sleep is considered good sleep?

The amount of sleep required varies from person to person, and therefore one cannot determine how much sleep is appropriate for an individual. While some may require 8-9 hours of sleep, it may seem too much for others who will need only 5 or 6 hours. On an average, 7 to 9 hours of sleep during the night is considered essential.

To ensure that sleep is restful and restorative, one must follow a regular time for sleeping and waking up. Also avoiding alcohol, caffeine and nicotine before bedtime will ensure quality sleep.

Certain kinds of sleep disorders can be treated with herbal supplements and medicines. There are numerous over-the-counter (OTC) sleeping pills available for treating insomnia. Herbs are also used as natural remedies and are proved to be effective. Herbal supplements that contain valerian herb are known to be good for treating sleep deprivation.
