Gotu Kola benefits for brain and memory support

In this article I am going to discuss about Gotu Kola benefits also known as Mandukaparni or Centella Asiatica for memory and recalling facts from brain.

Weak memory, poor concentration, less ability to recall are the bad effects of today’s stressful & competitive world and these problems occur due to age also.

Nature always offers so many gifts to human beings. One of the gifts is Centella Asiatica or Gotu Kola. In Ayurveda, Centella Asiatica also known as Mandukaparni, is described in detail as “Medhya Rasayan” which means it helps to improve memory and the power to recall facts from the brain. From ancient times it has been used in Ayurveda, as a memory and concentration enhancing herb.

Researchers stated that in clinical trials, Centella Asiatica or Gotu Kola has been found to improve the power of concentration. It also acts as an antioxidant, hence it is also useful in neurological disorders caused by free radical damage. Gotu Kola is described by Charak an ancient sage, as an anti aging plant. The herb that has been derived has been used for many centuries as a brain tonic.

Centella Asiatica is one of the best psychotropic drugs. Ref: Appa Rao etal. Observed a significant increase in the general mental ability, overall general adjustment and mental concentration at the end of six months of human trials. Ref: Medicinal plants cultivation & their uses;  Panda.

- Gotu Kola helps to regain general mental health through its tonic effect. Ref: Usman Ali etal Bull med. Ethnobot Res 2(1), 1981, 23-36

- Researchers stated that the tonic action of Centella Asiatica involves the stabilization of cell membrane and the revitalization of connective tissue. It also causes an overall decrease in the level of metabolic imbalances, thus facilitating learning & retention.

- Studies show that the herb tones up circulatory system and is said to improve the veins and capillaries. Ref: Marie, Nandine Antol, Healing Teas, 1996.

- The aqueous extract of the herb possesses an antioxidant effect but does not affect the behavioral despair and is comparable with diazepam (Valium), Diwan PV etal. Fitoterapia, v62(3) 1991-253-257).

In Ayurveda in the ancient texts of Charak Samhita, Susrutha  Samhita,  Mandukaparni has been described. From all these research references, it is observed that Centella Asiatica can help to improve memory and concentration.

Generally, poly herbal supplements containing Gotu Kola or Centella Asiatica along with proven memory enhancing herbs like Ashwagandha, Bacopa Monnieri, Convolvulus Pluricaulis and Glycyrrhiza Glabra, have a higher efficacy to enhance memory and concentration. Such formulations are also useful to improve the power of recollection and sharpness.
