Anemia is a condition in which the blood is deficient in red blood cells, in hemoglobin, or in total volume. In anemia, the numbers of Red Blood cells decrease or we can say that the percentage of hemoglobin gets decreased. There are many types of Anemia, but most common one is caused by the deficiency of Iron in blood.
The causative Factors include bleeding in women such as heavy periods during menstruation, piles or hemorrhoids, poor diet, loss of blood due to injury, low production of RBC, deficiency of Iron, deficiency of vitamins like Vit C, Vit B12, B6, Folic acid etc.
The symptoms include fatigue, weakness, headaches; discoloration of nails and lips, indigestion, flatulence, hand and feet remains cold, hair loss, numbness, sometimes poor concentration and dull looking skin.
Let us discuss about Anemia and use of Natural remedies. These remedies should not be a substitute for conventional medicine. In cases of serious symptoms and ailments one should consult a Medical Doctor.
Natural remedies for Anemia that are useful-
Sesamum or Sesamum indicum seeds and Jaggery (unrefined whole cane sugar) should be taken regularly as they are rich in Iron.
Mix beetroot juice and apple juice in equal parts add brown sugar or honey to it and drink it.
Eat figs daily.
Avoid coffee and tea.
Take a teaspoon of Ash gourd or Bottle gourd juice in the morning.
Moringa or Drum Stick leaves are rich in Iron hence they can be used in Anemia. If leaves are not available take herbal supplements of the same.
The herb Yellow dock or Curly dock is useful to increase Iron levels as this helps to increase absorption of Iron from the intestine.
Take Spinach juice or Grape juice daily.
Add 1 teaspoon Turmeric or Curcuma longa powder in plain yogurt and take it on empty stomach. First thing in the morning. Do not use this Anemia remedy after sunset as Yogurt generally should not be eaten in the evening or at night time. Ref: Ayurvedic Home Remedies by Vasant Lad.
Higher intake of Vitamin B12 is also useful to treat Anemia.
Eat lots of green vegetables.
Try to include Iron rich food in your breakfast and in meals like brown rice, lentils, raisins, prunes, bread and pastas made from whole grain flour.
If possible prepare foods in Iron pots or pans.
Take Amla or Indian gooseberry juice daily.
Mix powders of Turmeric and Gaduchi or Tinospora is equal parts and take ½ teaspoon thrice daily with honey.
Take powder of Spirulina 3 parts; add Black pepper 1 part and Amla powder 2 parts. Mix it thoroughly. Take this combination 1 teaspoon daily. Black pepper is added as it acts as a bioavailability enhancer, and Amla is added as an antioxidant and as it is also rich in Vitamin C.
Take ripe Banana powder with honey.
Do yoga regularly, if health permits.
If constipation occurs, take Triphala powder (It is commercially available) 1 teaspoon with warm water or use supplements.
Soak Almonds in water over night, then peel of the skin of Almonds, make a paste of this and eat it.
